How Reviews Affect Local SEO and Your Google Business Profile

Aug 5, 2026 · Anywhere Review

If you have ever wondered why a competitor sits in the top three of the map results while you are on page two, reviews are usually part of the answer. Not the only part, but a part you can actually influence this month.

What Google says it looks at

Google describes local ranking as a mix of three things: relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches what was searched. Distance is how close you are to the searcher. Prominence is how well known your business is, and Google states directly that review count and review score factor into local search ranking.

Distance you cannot change. Relevance and prominence you can, and reviews touch both.

The map pack is the real prize

For local searches, the block of three business listings above the regular results captures a large share of the clicks and nearly all the phone calls. Ranking fourth in that list means being invisible until someone taps "more places." Getting into those three is the single highest value local SEO outcome for most small businesses, and it is decided largely by your Google Business Profile rather than your website.

The four ways reviews move the needle

1. Volume and rating build prominence. More reviews, and a healthy rating, is the signal Google explicitly names. A business with 180 reviews reads as more established than one with 9, all else being equal.

2. Freshness signals an active business. A profile collecting reviews every week looks alive. One whose last review is from two summers ago looks dormant, and dormant profiles do not tend to hold top positions.

3. Review text adds relevance. When customers write "they rebuilt our retaining wall in Ooltewah," that language sits on your profile in the searcher's own vocabulary. You cannot script this, but you can nudge it by asking customers to mention what you did for them.

4. Click through and engagement. A listing with a strong rating and a large review count gets chosen more often out of the same set of results, and that behavior reinforces itself.

Your Google Business Profile is the foundation

Reviews land on your profile, so the profile has to be in order before they can do much work:

  • Consistent name, address, and phone. The exact same format everywhere it appears online. Mismatches dilute confidence in the listing.
  • The right primary category. This is one of the strongest relevance levers available, and a surprising number of businesses have it slightly wrong.
  • Complete hours, services, and service areas. Empty fields are missed chances to match a search.
  • Real photos, added regularly. Job site photos beat stock images every time.
  • Owner replies on reviews. Google encourages responding, and it gives you another honest chance to describe what you do and where.

Do reviews on other platforms count?

Google's own ranking leans on Google reviews, but reviews on Facebook, Yelp, and industry specific sites still matter for two reasons. They influence the customers who find you there, and they contribute to the general sense that your business is real and well regarded across the web. Focus your asking on Google, and let the others accumulate naturally.

Put your reviews to work off the profile

Reviews sitting on one platform only work when someone is already looking at that platform. Bring them where your customers actually land:

  • On your website, near the points where people decide to call.
  • On a dedicated review page you can link from anywhere.
  • In social posts, one strong review at a time.
  • In quotes and proposals, where they answer objections before they are raised.

A realistic 90 day plan

  1. Weeks 1 to 2: Audit the profile. Fix the category, hours, services, and address formatting. Add current photos.
  2. Weeks 3 to 12: Ask every customer for a review, same day, one link, one follow up.
  3. Ongoing: Reply to every review within a couple of days, and publish your reviews on your own site so they influence people who never open Maps.

None of this is exotic. It is just consistent, and consistency is precisely what most local competitors cannot sustain.
